Spring Into Savannah!

This coming Spring will bring an opportunity for some NAMGAR members to start their driving season in a grand way by joining in on “NAMGAR Tours Savannah” from April 15- 19, 2013. So, get your taxes done early and come relax with us in a beautiful historic grand city of the South!

Savannah contains more than twenty city squares filled with museums, churches, mansions, monuments, and famous forts of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars making it the largest National Historic landmark District in the United States. Our host hotel is the Best Western Plus in the Historic District; so you’ll be literally footsteps from all the action. Room rates are $129 plus $10 parking per night plus local and state taxes; rooms can be reserved by calling the hotel directly at 912-233-1011 and mentioning NAMGAR to get our rate. The Event Registration fee is $25 per person. Download the Registration Form.

savannahWe’ve planned a mixture of activities and left time to add some new ones of your choosing. Along the same train of thought, we planned a few meals and again left the door open for you to sample some of the local fare, either on your own or with some of the group. It may be that on Tuesday after the narrated trolley tour you may decide to take a place in line for entry into Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room at The Wilkes House, 107 West Jones Street where a line gathers each morning. At 11 o'clock, the doors of 107 open and the lunch crowd finds seats at one of the large tables-for-ten shared by strangers. Tabletops are crowded with platters of fried chicken and cornbread dressing, sweet potato soufflé, black-eyed peas, okra gumbo, corn muffins, and biscuits. The menu changes daily so regulars can have something different every day and enjoy the special pleasure of a meal shared with neighbors and strangers.

Savannah TheatreOf course, you may decide to go back to any one of the stops on the trolley tour and scope out that area for interesting sites and things to do. You have the remainder of the day to continue doing just that; just remember that the trolleys stop running at 4 p.m. Should you find another way back to our hotel, be sure to arrive well in advance of the 6 p.m. pick-up when we will head down to the theatre district for dinner on our own. There are quite a few pubs near the theatre including the Six Pence Pub, which was featured in the Julia Roberts’ movie Much to Talk About and has the distinction of being the most authentic English pub in all of Georgia. After dinner, you can relax in the park (Forrest Gump’s park) near the theatre until time to head into the 8 p.m. show. The Savannah Theatre opened its doors in 1818 and is still operating on its original site, even though it has undergone several face-lifts as a result of damaging fires. The show that night is Savannah Live! a dazzling new variety show with two hours of high-energy song, dance, and comedy.

Registrations are starting to come in and rooms are beginning to be reserved; space is limited to the first 60 people, so be sure to get in on the fun!
