As part of the celebrations in 2015 to mark the 60th anniversary of the launch of our favourite sports car, the MGA Register (UK) is staging a new departure in its annual calendar. The Dutch Windmills & Waterways Tour will take place from Friday, April 24th to Monday, April 27th, 2015.

The tentative itinerary for the tour is as follows:

Following a morning P&O ferry crossing from Dover to Calais our direct routing to Loosdrecht takes you via Ghent, Antwerp and the outskirts of Utrect (mileage 221 miles), however is you choose to take a more scenic route, then crossing the Belgian-Dutch border in Sluis and following the coastal road via Middleburg, Rozenburg and Rotterdam with give you a much more leisurely option. From Rotterdam you can rejoin the E25 to Utrect then on to Loosdrecht (mileage 240 miles). Arrival at the excellent Golden Tulip Hotel on the Loosdrecht Lakes will, dependent on your route by late afternoon/early evening. After check-in and some free time to freshen up we have arranged a group welcome dinner to give you the opportunity to meet your fellow travellers.

After breakfast you'll enjoy a wonderful day exploring some of Holland's iconic tourist destinations. In the morning you'll enjoy a visit to Zanse Schans, a fully inhabited, open-air conservation area and museum located just a few miles north of Amsterdam. Here you'll get a vivid impression of the Dutch way of life in the 17th and 18th centuries. The area consists of authentic houses, a historic shipyard, a pewter factory, a cheese and dairy farm, an age-old grocery store, clog-making demonstrations, and above all, lots of windmills.

Departing Zanse Schans you'll make the short journey to Volendam, an old fishing village at the Ijsselmeer characterized by countless little houses around the small fishing port. Wander through the streets and enjoy the town’s lively atmosphere, take a walk along the dike, churches and old center then have your picture taken in Dutch traditional costume. The traditional costumes are sill worn on folkloric events. Our return to loosdrecht is via Hoorn and the Houtribdijk, a dike in the Netherlands, built between 1963 and 1975 which connects the cities of Enkhuizen and Lelystad. On the south side of the dike is the Markermeer and on the north side is the IJsselmeer. Although called a dike, the Houtribdijk is actually a dam. (Mileage 125 miles). Dinner in the hotel is included.

Following a leisurely breakfast you'll enjoy a scenic 3 hours cruise on the Loosdtrect Lakes and Vecht river. Departure will be from the hotel, so there's no need to use your car this morning and during the cruise we've even arranged for you to sample a Dutch pancake. The afternoon is at leisure. Why not take a trip to the Austin Healey Museum in Vreland or visit the nearby town of Hilversum. For those of you who feel more adventurous, Amsterdam is just a 30 minute drive away, or if you don't want to take your car into the city you can catch a train from Hilversum direct to Amstersdam's Central station. Dinner in the hotel is included.

Departing the hotel and Loosdrecht after breakfast, today we retrace our steps back to Calais, stopping en route in the seaside town of Scheveningen, home to the Louwman Museum, the national automobile museum of the Netherlands with one of the world’s largest and most famous collections of historic automobiles on public display. Connoisseurs consider the collection, assembled by two generations of the family Louwman, as one of the finest in the world. From Scheveningen you can head directly back to Calais, or take the short diversion via Kinderdijk and its 19 working windmills constructed around 1740 as part of a larger water management system which prevented floods. The mills are lined up in two opposite rows and form a spectacular sight. The unique character of the area was rewarded with a UNESCO recognition in 1997. Late afternoon/early evening P&O sailing from Calais to Dover.

Dutch Tour

All 67 rooms have been reserved at the Golden Tulip Hotel on the lakeside in Loosdrecht, ideally situated for tours to various places of interest. The dates of the tour have been chosen with a view to visiting the famous bulbfields and hopefully the seasonal variations in the climate will allow us to see the blooms in all their glory. But don’t worry, there is so much more to see and do.

This event has been especially designed to encourage the participation of our MGA friends in mainland Europe. As you will see, a reduction of £50 in the already very competitive cost of this tour is available for owners who do not need to cross the Channel.

For UK participants, there is the option to travel via P&O North Sea Ferries from Hull to Rotterdam and also to book a later return ferry for those who wish to extend their break.

A deposit of only £150 per car will reserve your place. Download the Booking Form, complete it and send it directly to Scenic and Continental Car Tours – address on the Booking Form. Please also email a copy of your booking form to the organizers to ensure you receive further news on this event direct from the MGA Register. Also, use this email address if you have any general queries about the tour.

For North American visitors, please contact Kieran Line at Scenic Car Tours for further information on payment methods. Tel: +44 (0)1732 879172 or send an email.
