Summer’s Coming … and so is GT-39

As I sit to write this at the beginning of February, it’s snowing outside again. Yet another winter storm is making its way through the Ottawa Valley. The mercury has climbed up the thermometer a bit today but this has still been one of the coldest and snowiest winters we’ve had in these parts for quite a few years.

Summer seems like a long way off right now. With any luck however, by the time you read this, winter will be giving up its grip on the northern areas, spring will be in the air, and we’ll all be preparing to get our much loved little cars out of winter storage and back on the road. The excitement surrounding GT-39, which once seemed like a far off event, will be starting to grow even stronger with each passing week.

Registration for GT-39 opened mid-January and the registrations, both online and by mail, started to come in almost immediately. Based on early results, there seems to be plenty of interest in Ottawa and GT-39 should be quite well attended. Many of you, who are planning to come to Ottawa in July to join in all the fun, have not got around to registering yet. Perhaps you’re thinking that there’s still plenty of time and that you’ll register later, closer to the event. That’s fine, but I want to remind everyone that the Red-and-White Dinner Cruise on Tuesday is a limited participation activity. The cruise boat has a limited seating capacity. Based again on early registrations, this appears to be quite a popular activity and it’s possible that it could sell out ahead of time. Once all of the tickets are sold, folks who haven’t yet registered will unfortunately not be able to attend the dinner cruise. To avoid disappointment, if you want to participate in what promises to be a fun filled evening aboard the Ottawa River Queen, don’t wait too long to register for GT-39.

The preferred method is to register and pay online, which you can do by visiting the Registration page on the GT-39 website . You’ll also find a registration form on the website which, if you prefer, you can print, fill in, and mail along with your payment. A GT-39 registration form is also included in the March/April 2014 issue of MGA! magazine. Please print clearly when filling in the form and remember to include your vehicle's NAMGAR registration number. This is the four digit number that was assigned to your vehicle when it was first registered with NAMGAR.

To assist with our planning, don’t forget to indicate if you’d like to visit Parliament Hill on Tuesday morning and/or bring your car along on the Capital Tour on Tuesday afternoon. Be sure to double check sizing information on the GT-39 website prior to ordering your GT-39 regalia items.

We can all appreciate how much effort it takes to pull off a GT. Members of the Ottawa MG Club will be helping to run various activities during GT-39 and making sure that attendees are enjoying themselves during their visit to Ottawa. Did you know that we need your help too? When registering, please indicate your willingness to volunteer for an hour or two during the week and help make GT-39 a success. A raffle, which is always a popular GT activity, will be included as part of the GT-39 festivities. Folks are encouraged to donate an item for the raffle. Bring your donation along with you and drop it off with the raffle coordinator on arrival at the GT. If you’d rather send your raffle donation to us ahead of time, please contact the host committee for further information.

Reservations for the Courtyard by Marriott Ottawa East can be made online through the GT-39 website. If you prefer, call the hotel toll free at 888-236-2427 or locally at 613-288-2173 and quote “NAMGAR GT-39 2014” (group code NGG). The group rate for GT-39 attendees is $149 CDN per night, breakfast included, and is available for several days prior to and following the GT. Reservations must be made by June 13, 2014 to qualify for this rate.

Anyone travelling to Canada from the United States is reminded that proof of citizenship will be required when crossing the border into Canada and on your return to the U.S. A valid passport is recommended, but either an Enhanced Drivers License or a NEXUS card is an acceptable alternative. Take a minute now to check that your chosen travel document is valid beyond July, 2014. If it’s not, apply for a replacement today.

To stay up to date on all the latest GT-39 information and to see what our mascot is up to, visit the GT-39 website regularly. Questions about Ottawa or GT-39 can be emailed to the host committee. Registration enquiries should be sent to the GT-39 Registration Chairman.

Summer is coming and July will be here before you know it. Don’t miss out on a truly unique experience. Planning to be in Ottawa this summer and having fun with NAMGAR friends new and old at GT-39 is definitely A Capital Idea.
