Established several years ago as “Drive Your MGA Day” by the North American MGA Register, our club expanded it to include all MGs and Jaguars. This year’s event took place Saturday, May 5th.

Seventeen cars (4 MGAs, 7 MGBs, 5 Jaguars and a Triumph TR3A) reported to the start of the poker run at 9:30 am at Richmond’s Garry Point Park in bright sunshine. The Run included four stops: Ladner Harbour Park, the Boundary Bay Airport, the Royal Canadian Legion at Crescent Beach and Campbell Valley Regional Park, where each participating team drew a card for a poker hand. At the completion of the drive of around 80 kms, the participants arrived at the Artful Dodger Pub in Langley for lunch. Participants unhappy with their poker hands could buy replacement cards for $2 each, with all proceeds going to the Kruise for Kids.

CCMGC members Allen & Maureen Brown (pictured above) in their 1972 MGB roadster (Team Wiltshire) won the grand prize for the best poker hand. Winner of the Golf Score Award for the lowest score was Nick Zwager with his navigator Susan Philcox in his 1994 Jaguar XJS (Team Chrysus, named for his dog also on the run, pronounced “Cresus”). Many thanks to the organizers of this very successful event, Chris Down and Ruth Schmidt.

The Boundary Bay Airport stop brought another poker card.

Other Poker Run team names included:

Peter & Anne Tilbury - Mambo Bado, the slogan for their rally team in Kenya in the 1970s and 1980s, which in Swahili means “no news yet” or alternately “things will happen”; Steve and Sheila Kaufman - Team ‘eh’; Brian & Barb McBride- MG Acers; Mike McChesney and Keith Mullins -Team Cheam; Peter Cuthbert - Gear Grinder; Steve & Nell Collins - Team Collins (aka Ecurie Escargot). And then there was Vito Donatiello in the Triumph TR3 – MGs for Breakfast.
